About the Role

In this role you will lead a multidisciplinary team, including junior medical staff, Aboriginal Liaison Officers, nurses, and allied health professionals, while providing clinical leadership for the Psychiatry Liaison Nurse Service to ensure thorough reviews for emergency department mental health presentations and acute cases in the general hospital. A key part of the role is mentoring junior staff and ensuring compliance with the Western Australian Mental Health Act (2014), with a focus on clinical excellence.
 
The position serves a population with 80-90% Aboriginal patients, emphasising culturally sensitive care in collaboration with Aboriginal Liaison Officers. This role offers exposure to diverse clinical cases, including first-episode psychosis, mood disorders, and substance use disorders, while contributing to the development of mental health care within Aboriginal communities. The mental health unit provides acute psychiatric care and is supported by a dedicated Aboriginal Mental Health team, working closely with community services to ensure continuity and culturally safe care. The health service you will be working for delivers multidisciplinary, recovery-oriented services across a broad demographic.
 
About the Area
 
This position is situated in the northernmost part of Western Australia. The area is bordered by the Pilbara region to the south and the Northern Territory to the east. This culturally diverse region is home to around 40,000 people, with about half that number identifying as Aboriginal.
 
As you explore the area, you will find striking landscapes, featuring towering cliffs, rocky headlands and beautifully clean waterways. The area offers easy access to the Fitzroy River and King Sound, perfect for fishing, crabbing and boating enthusiasts. During time away from work visitors and locals can explore the rugged islands of the nearby archipelago or camp at Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek, embracing the natural beauty and adventure that define the Kimberley.
