The Role:
We are seeking an ICU Consultant/Intensivist to join a regional hospital in a beautiful coastal location in sunny Queensland!

The Department of Intensive Care Services is seeking applicants with FCICM qualification to serve as the 5th Intensive Care Specialist, joining a highly motivated and dynamic team of Doctors, Nurses, and Allied Health professionals. The Hospital caters to the acute inpatient healthcare needs of the community, servicing a population of about 120,000. As one of Australia’s top 10 fastest growing regions, it is an increasingly vibrant community and a beautiful tourist destination with many seasonal visitors. CICM Level 2 Intensive Care Services.

The Intensive Care Service currently operates from an 8 bedded mixed medical / surgical ICU with CICM level 2 capabilities (paediatric Level 1) and can accommodate a maximum of 7 patients requiring invasive ventilation simultaneously, with up to 4 patients who can receive CRRT / Plasmapheresis simultaneously. The Intensive Care Service is one of the busiest general intensive care services in regional QLD, with a fascinatingly diverse case-mix with complex comorbidities, high acuity (average APACHE 3 score 51 to 53) and an annual average bed occupancy over 90%.

A new 10 bedded ICU is scheduled for construction on level 2 and is expected to be completed in late 2024, with further infrastructure and service expansion proposals in progress. The ICU is currently accredited with the CICM for Foundation, Regional, Elective and 6 months Core Training in General Intensive Care, with additional training time accreditable towards Medicine, Anaesthesia and Potentially paediatric components, for CICM registrars rotating from the QLD ICU recruitment pathway.

  • You will be expected to provide specialist intensive care medical services within the Hospital and Health Service.
  • Assist the Clinical Director of Intensive Care Services to ensure clinical services provided are of the highest standard and delivered in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Assist with the education and supervision of trainees and other medical staff, medical students, allied health and nursing staff.

The ideal candidate would be highly capable and determined to make a difference to patient welfare by striving for clinical excellence in such a challenging environment. They must dedicate themselves with enthusiasm to sustain a high standard of patient-centered & value-based care in this relatively underserved region, and to safely develop the scope of the service towards CICM level 3 to meet the service demand and healthcare needs for the local community.

They should assist in gaining 12 months core training accreditation in General Intensive Care, by exercising professional leadership in quality improvement, mentoring all clinical staff including Registrars/RMOs and promoting a transparent, collaborative, educative, patient centric and enjoyable work culture. Echocardiography skills and qualification, paediatric ICU experience, clinical research credentials and a passion for teaching with a simulation training qualification are highly desirable, as is a friendly nature and taking pride in providing exemplary service with a smile.

Remuneration value up to $461,256 p.a

Including: motor vehicle allowance, professional development allowance, professional development leave 3.6 weeks p.a., professional indemnity cover and private practice arrangements.  Overtime and on-call allowances will be negotiated with the successful applicant upon appointment. Superannuation (up to 12.75%) and annual leave loading (17.5%) will be applied additionally to the total remuneration value.

Skills/Qualifications
Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand is preferred, as
recognised by the Australian Medical Council, including maintenance of CPD and good standing as
required by AHPRA for the maintenance of Specialist Registration.

Specialist Registrants will be preferred in all positions; however non-specialists may be considered where appropriate and significant progression towards fellowship can be demonstrated. Applicants
who have completed specialist qualifications but are yet to be registered as a specialist are encouraged to apply.
